Pillar/Phallus

Unlike other gods Dionysus had very few temples, its speculated that this because Dionysus is everywhere, the life force of nature. He was also celebrated in the theatre and in sacred groves. During his festivals women would form groups and camp in the wilds, they would dress a bust of Pan in robes and place a mask over Pan’s head. Just like an actor becomes a character in a play by donning a mask, thus Pan became Dionysus. At the end of the celebrations, the women would ceremoniously kill Dionysus by removing the mask, which they would then mourn until his rebirth the next year.
